Reconstitution guide

Understanding Medication Reconstitution

Learn what medication reconstitution means, how concentration changes when liquid is added, and which labelled values are needed for a mathematical calculation.

What does reconstitution mean?

Reconstitution is the process of adding a specified liquid to a dry or concentrated product so it reaches a usable concentration. The product instructions or a healthcare professional should determine the correct liquid, volume, technique and storage conditions.

Safety first: PeppyCalc does not determine what liquid to use, how much to add, or what dose is appropriate. It only converts values that you already have from a reliable source.

The three labelled values behind the calculation

Why concentration matters

Adding more liquid does not change the total amount of active ingredient in the vial. It changes how much active ingredient is present in each millilitre.

Concentration = total amount in vial ÷ total liquid volume

Use compatible units

Milligrams and micrograms can be converted because they measure mass. International units describe biological activity and must not be treated as milligrams or micrograms unless the product provides a specific conversion.

Before relying on a result

Check the label, decimal point, unit, total liquid volume and syringe scale. When anything is unclear, stop and confirm it with a pharmacist, prescriber or other qualified professional.
